Aw, Snap! STATUS ACCESS VIOLATION Intel 13th Gen i9

TL;DR If you are constantly receiving STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION errors on your web browser and you are running a 13th Gen I9 processor i9-13900K LGA1700, open an RMA ticket for it and replace it.

I was having this happen frequently, with many access violation errors across all web browsers; it wasn’t just Chrome. Also, while running my computer overnight, it would usually have a blue screen and reboot. While idle or during normal use, it would occasionally have a blue screen during the day as well.

The Long Story

I upgraded my system with an RTX 4080 and a 13900K 13th gen i9 processor to better handle editing 8K video. Everything worked great, and then a few weeks later, the errors started coming in, and my screen would turn black on occasion. While I thought it was unlikely a $1,500 graphics card would have problems, I sent it in for repairs. After a month, I received the card, and I had the same problem. I resent the card and received a replacement. Guess what? I had the same problem! After some research, it turns out the power cable that they supply is not great. I purchased a CORSAIR 12+4pin PCIe Gen 5 Type-4 600W 12VHPWR Cable, which solved that problem.

I thought I was good to go now! However, I continued to receive STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION errors, and generic blue screen errors including (PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA and IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL). I opened a lengthy troubleshooting form on Microsoft, and after all the back and forth and troubleshooting, they couldn’t help.

I figured I would replace some hardware to see if it would fix the problem, and I basically built a new computer and didn’t change the processor 🤣.

  • Upgraded from a 850 watt power supply to a 1000

  • Upgraded from a 1000 to a 1000-watt Gen 5

  • Replaced the Memory

  • Added a better CPU cooler

  • Formatted windows on a brand-new SSD

  • The graphics card was replaced by an RMA

  • I replaced the motherboard too

I got to the point where I just accepted the errors and noted them as an inconvenience. Recently I came across multiple articles explaining how poor the 13th and 14th gen i9 processors were, so I figured I’d replace mine.

Thanks to the motherboard upgrade I did, I could use 14th gen processors, and the i7 14th gen is just slightly under the 13th gen i9; I put it in, and guess what!? No more errors!! I can leave my PC on overnight and wake up to it in the same state I left it!

If you are having problems and you also have one of the latest Intel i9 processors, I’d highly recommend replacing it through intel’s support.
